We are pleased to announce the launch of our new gift certificates. These gift cards can be used towards any of our services, including our prenatal ASL workshop and our baby sign language classes. For a complete description of our services, click here.
This 45 minute workshop for pregnant people will introduce you to sign language. Research has shown that teaching your baby sign language will improve cognitive and emotional development. Signing from birth is doable, and this workshop will teach you how. We’ll cover the ASL signs that will get you started and discuss how to create an ASL routine with your baby. You’ll come away with specific strategies that you can use as soon as your baby is born. You’ll also be provided with resources to take home.
Our prenatal ASL workshop is $20 and gift certificates are available. Makes a great baby shower gift! Contact us to book a session by email at Lisa@BlackBearHealingHome.com or by phone and text at 613-558-3199.

Lisa provided ASL services to a home daycare provider. Check out these kind words from Carolyn:
How many ASL teachers does it take to teach a Newfie ASL? One, if her name is Lisa Garrett, this girl had the patience of a saint, she is the kindest, most patient person I have ever met. My fingers wouldn’t stay or go where they were suppose to, my favourite sign is “again”, And Lisa would do it again and again, making sure I got it. Lisa is also very passionate about ASL and you can tell the moment you meet her. Thank you so much and I wish you the best of luck, Lisa.
Black Bear Healing Home is pleased to announce that Lisa is now a certified instructor with My Smart Hands. She will be teaching ASL classes to babies and their caregivers throughout Lanark County. The first session of classes will be held in Carleton Place. Stay tuned for dates.
Check out this video to see a signing baby in action.
My Smart Hands classes use 100% American Sign Language and include a signing manual for you to take home. Sign language allows babies to communicate with you, reducing your frustration and theirs. When your baby signs their first sign to you and you know exactly what it is they want, you will be amazed. Signing with your baby can provide a bonding experience that needs to be felt in order to be believed. ASL is also a language, and using American Sign Language with your baby means that you are giving your hearing child the gift of an additional language. Signing is for everyone! Sign early and sign often.
If you would like to be added to the ongoing wait list, phone Lisa at 613-558-3199 or email Lisa@BlackBearHealingHome.com.
This picture is from the CROW playgroup held at the arena in Carleton Place. You can read more about Black Bear Healing Home’s involvement with Children’s Resources on Wheels (CROW)’s free playgroup here. Lisa is no longer attending all of the Thursday morning playgroups. However, if you are a Deaf parent or caregiver and / or you care for a Deaf child, then Lisa is available to attend playgroups upon request. This is a free ASL interpreting service intended for conversational purposes. Lisa also interprets the nursery rhymes and stories during circle time. Free CROW playgroups are held in Carleton Place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.

Black Bear Healing Home and Children’s Resources on Wheels (CROW) have created a new partnership!
CROW is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and strengthening child care, family life, child development, and community links in Lanark County. One of the services they provide are playgroups throughout Lanark County for children and their caregivers. This includes free weekly playgroups in Carleton Place.
Lisa attends the Thursday morning playgroup at the Carleton Place arena from 9:30 to 11:30 in order to provide ASL instruction to children and their caregivers. This includes playing and signing with children at the different play centers and being available to answer caregivers’ questions about signing at home. Lisa also offers ASL interpretation for the musical circle time at the end of playgroup.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! Lisa can be reached by email at Lisa@BlackBearHealingHome.com or by phone and text at 613-558-3199.
On Saturday, July 30 Black Bear Healing Home will be hosting the next free session of Sign and Swing! from 6pm-7pm at The Yellow Park in Carleton Place (intersection of Bridge Street and Thomas Street).
ASL Circle Time will begin at 6:15pm. We’ll start by reading Growing Vegetable Soup, written and illustrated by Lois Ehlert.
We’ll practice our colours in ASL, and sign the nursery rhyme “Ten in the Bed.” After that there will be time for questions and discussion on the topic of ASL and signing at home. And of course the swings, play structure, and large open space will be available for free play before and after the workshop (and during, for those who prefer swinging to signing).
Weather permitting… it’s just too hard to read a book in the rain! If you’re wondering whether or not the group will be running, you can call or text Lisa at 613-558-3199. Cancellations will also be posted on Black Bear Healing Home’s blog.
All ages, all ASL levels, all welcome. Hope to see you there!
